The three fields ask for very different things. Here’s the honest shape of each before you pick one.
| Field | Time to first job | Where you learn | Credential | Pay while training |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Healthcare | A few months to about a year for entry roles | Mostly online, plus short in-person clinical practice | State registry (CNA) or a voluntary national certification | You usually pay for the course; may qualify for state funding |
| Information Technology | Weeks to a few months per certification | Mostly online, with a free home lab to practice | CompTIA and vendor certifications — not a four-year degree | You usually pay for the course; may qualify for state funding |
| Skilled Trades | Several years to a full license | Online or classroom theory, plus on-the-job apprenticeship | A state license after supervised hours and an exam | You earn a wage as an apprentice |
State-funded short courses open the entry-level doors in each field. They’re certificates, not degrees, so the first job is usually an entry role — help desk in IT, a nurse aide or phlebotomist in healthcare, an apprentice in the trades — and pay grows from there with experience and further training. Each guide below is honest about where a field starts and where it can lead.
