Careers & training
Do I need a college degree to get a good job?
Not always. Many jobs in healthcare, IT and the skilled trades are open to people without a four-year degree, and several can be trained for in months. See our career paths for what each field pays and how to train.
Can I train online?
It depends on the field. Office-based roles like medical billing and IT support are very online-friendly. Hands-on roles — medical assistant, phlebotomy, and the licensed trades — can start online but need in-person practice or supervised hours.
How long does training take?
It varies. Some healthcare and IT certificates take a few months, while licensed trades take years of apprenticeship. Each career guide explains the typical path.
Paying for training
How much does training cost, and how do people pay?
It varies by program and provider. Most people combine sources — state funding, employer help, and sometimes a payment plan. See Ways to Pay.
Can Massachusetts pay for my training?
You may qualify for funded training through a MassHire career center (a WIOA/ITA voucher). If you get unemployment benefits, ask about Section 30. Only your career center can approve funding. Start with our WIOA eligibility guide.
Where do I actually start?
Two free steps: find your MassHire Career Center at mass.gov, and register on JobQuest. Or take our quick Check Your Options quiz.
Do you accept VA benefits?
Career Skills Center does not have its own courses yet. If you served, you may have education benefits like the GI Bill — the VA’s GI Bill Comparison Tool shows which schools are approved.
For employers
Can my company get training reimbursed?
We provide the training; the reimbursement comes from the state. Through the Workforce Training Fund Express Program, eligible Massachusetts employers can be reimbursed for much of what they spend on training — you apply directly to the state. See Staff Training Grants and how Express works.
Do you run apprenticeships?
Career Skills Center provides the training side — we can deliver the related classroom instruction a Registered Apprenticeship requires. Employers register and run the apprenticeship with the state. See Apprenticeship Programs.
Can you train my team on something specific?
Tell us what your team needs. We’re building corporate training for employers, with or without state funding.
