State-funded training

Massachusetts may pay for your training

Massachusetts runs the system that pays for most career training, through your local MassHire career center. You have to apply and qualify, and only a career center can approve funding — but many people don’t realize they may be eligible.

  • WIOA / Individual Training Account (ITA)A voucher from your MassHire career center that pays for approved training. Register on JobQuest first, then work with a counselor.
  • Section 30 (for people on unemployment)If you get unemployment benefits, Section 30 can let you keep collecting while you train full-time. Apply early — there are deadlines.
  • Donnelly and other state grantsMassachusetts funds training programs through grants like the Senator Kenneth J. Donnelly Workforce Success Grants. These go to organizations, so look for a program funded by one.

Other ways to pay

Beyond state funding

Employer-paid training

Ask your employer. Massachusetts employers can be reimbursed for training their staff through the state Workforce Training Fund (including the Express Program).

Payment plans

Many training providers offer monthly payment plans so you can spread the cost out. Ask any provider about terms, interest and whether there’s a prepayment penalty before you sign.

Private lenders

Some students use a career-training loan. Compare the interest rate, total cost and repayment terms carefully, and treat borrowing as a last resort after grants and vouchers.
